Having returned to Mortal Kombat X in August 2018, after taking over a year off to pursue other games, it's been a while since I tried to make a helpful video on this game.
With all of the new game modes since launch, there are several ways you can obtain Souls for free. If Souls were 50% off the regular price, I could see buying them, but why pay $100 for what you can farm in about 2 weeks? 2000 Souls for $20 would be a much more reasonable purchase.

In this Mortal Kombat X Video, we go over the Tips and Tricks that new players should focus on.
First, you should buy every Bronze and Silver card possible
Second, buy Cutthroat Kano, if you played the game in the past and own Injustice Scorpion, Undercover Cassie Cage, Cybernetic Jacqui Briggs, or Thunder God Raiden from the OG Challenge when he costed 285,000 Koins, then get 4 or 5 promotions for Kenshi, then pick a Gold and max them out first.
Third, max out Silver Kenshi BEFORE touching any Equipment Packs, if you have a console unlock for Klassic Kitana, consider maxing her out as well.
Fourth, Max out Bronze Saurian or Oni. If you played during Console unlocks, max out Ninja Mime Johnny Cage first.
At this point you will have some Souls, you can either gamble on the limited time 200 Soul packs and try to pull a better character, or pull from the 150 Soul packs
Consider buying one Netherrealm Pack at minimum
Grind Faction Wars to place higher
Make sure you do all of your Daily Objectives
If you can spare the characters, OR after you grind with them, invest in HOUR quests, look for Hard/Very Hard Hour quests, as you get 9 Souls for completing them. 4 Hour Quests give 15 Souls, so only do these if you are working and know you'll be taking a lunch in 4 hours.
Longer quests, much like Operations in Injustice 2, have a higher chance of rewarding characters, and gear.
Make sure you do Shao Khan's Tower for free Souls and Spirit Fragments so you can resurrect Shao Khan when the event comes around.
Make sure you quest for Reptile when that event comes around. Be warned you have to fight a 160K Health Reptile, so if you are a new player you might want to wait to summon him.
Do challenges whenever possible, and don't be afraid to spend a few souls to skip the boss fight if you cannot complete it, it's still cheaper than buying the card outright and if you like the character, you can then promote it for Souls.
